How Zee Solo sounds, and what it says

The voice, the positioning, the subbie's own words and every line we might use, each marked ready to test, needs the Claims Register, or blocked. Built from Valla's brief, our research and the drafts in the other plans.

How to read the statuses: Ready to test a product fact in low-risk words. It still gets a quick register check before it goes live. Needs register fine in principle, but the wording sits near a red line. Blocked waits on a change (a product fact, HMRC recognition, a ruling). Parked belongs to a name we're not using.

The brand is Zee: Zee Solo for subbies, Zee Hub for contractors. Every line below uses it.

02What is Zee Solo, in one breath?

Zee Solo handles the money side of the trade, on the phone

For UK subbies paid under CIS, and whoever does their books, Zee Solo is the app that handles the money side of the trade: invoices with labour, materials and your deduction worked out before you send, the statements from your contractors in one place, and your records kept ready for the quarter. Unlike general accounting apps built for office workers, it's built around how subbies get paid, and it's free to start.

This is the internal positioning. Every line has to fit it, but it is not public copy: "unlike general accounting apps" stays internal because we don't make public comparisons.

Who we're up against

The enemyThe shoebox of receipts. Invoices on WhatsApp. Chasing payslips. Finding out in April what you should have known in October.
Never the enemyHMRC (we explain the rules). Accountants (Plus sells their review, and they're a channel). Named competitors (the register forbids it).
03How does Zee Solo sound?

Five voice rules, each said both ways

Valla's brief sets the tone: "Plain trade English, dry humour welcome, zero fintech buzzwords." Each rule below shows the same idea said the right way and the wrong way.

1 · Plain and short

Like thisLabour on one line. Materials on another. Your deduction worked out before you send.
Not thisStreamline your invoicing workflow with automated CIS compliance.

2 · Dry, never jokey

The humour comes from the observation. Never at the subbie's expense, never at HMRC's.

Like thisNobody picked up a trowel for the paperwork.
Not thisTaxes got you like 😩? We've got you! 🙌

3 · On their side, calm about the rules

Like thisFrom April 2027, if you earn over £30,000, you'll send HMRC an update every quarter. Here's what that means for a subbie.
Not thisHMRC is coming for your money. Don't get caught out!

4 · Straight about money

One price table, shown once, "+VAT" every time. Say what's free, what isn't, and what happens after the trial.

Like thisFree: £0, no card. Standard: £25 a month +VAT. Your first month has everything; after that you drop to Free unless you choose otherwise.
Not thisFrom just 83p a day!*

5 · Clear about what we are

Like thisWe're the app, not your accountant. We work out the numbers and keep the records; the tax is still yours.
Not thisNever worry about tax again.
Three habits

Lead with the pain and sign off with the name. "See what you'll be paid before you send it", then the name. Send rate-specific copy only to that group: never assume everyone's on 20% (the brief's rule F9). Use their word first, then the proper term: "payslip" before "payment and deduction statement".

04Whose words do we use?

We use their words first, then the correct term

Taken from 150 sourced quotes on forums, app reviews and accountants' Q&As. Subbies never used accountant terms such as "CIS suffered", "verification" or "gross up".

They sayThe proper termHow we use it
"stopped", "taken"deductedHeadlines say "stopped"; body copy explains deduction
"the 20%", "the 30%"standard / higher deduction rateOnly to the matching segment; "your rate" when we don't know
"payslip"payment and deduction statementSay both the first time
"rebate"repayment through Self AssessmentWe don't use it in marketing. It's the refund promise the register rules out
"the tax man"HMRCHMRC in copy; fine in a creator's own mouth
"subbie", "sparky", "chippy", "brickie", "spark"subcontractor, electrician, carpenter, bricklayerUse in social and creator content; "subcontractor" in the store listing for search
"doing the books", "OH/DH does my books"bookkeepingWe say "whoever does the books": it covers partners without assuming who they are

Words we don't use

Fintech: seamless, streamline, empower, solution, platform (in consumer copy), workflow, effortless, revolutionise, compliance as a benefit. Red-line words: refund, rebate, reclaim, overpaying, "save you money", guaranteed, HMRC-approved, HMRC-recognised, MTD-compatible, "we file for you", "never worry about tax".

05What are the core messages?

One promise and four pillars, each with proof

The money side of the trade, sorted, and free to start.

1 · Get it right on the invoice

Brief: "Invoices contractors actually accept." Ours: "See what you'll be paid before you send it."

Proof: labour and materials split, deduction at your verified rate shown before sending (brief §2). No live UK ad says this (0 Meta ads for "CIS invoice"). Reviews complain mainstream apps "can't put a minus figure in".

2 · Know where it went

Brief: "Know where your CIS money went." Ours: "Every payslip in one place."

Proof: statements from contractors and the CIS pot (brief §2, Free tier). Caution: "every payslip" is only true for contractors on Zee Hub unless Valla confirms otherwise.

3 · Free to start, built for subbies

Brief: "Free to start. No card." Ours: "Built for subbies, not office workers."

Proof: the Free tier (£0, no card, invoicing and statements). "Built for office workers, not tradespeople" is a direct review quote about other apps.

4 · Ready for the quarter

Brief: "Quarter-end without the shoebox of receipts."

Proof: expenses by category, quarterly summaries, MTD-ready records (Terms §3). Timing: leads January to March, before the £30,000 threshold arrives in April 2027. It must never imply filing: the Terms say Zee Solo doesn't submit to HMRC.

Pillars 1 and 3 carry the launch. Pillar 2 grows as more contractors join Zee Hub. Pillar 4 is seasonal.

Note for accountants to forward to clientsIf you're a CIS subbie, this free app puts labour, materials and your deduction on every invoice, and keeps your contractors' statements together, so your records reach us tidy.

10What does Valla need to rule on?

Five points where our sources disagree

  1. The brief's own words against its red lines. The brief describes the 30% group as "overpaying every single week" and the 20% group's pain as "year-end reclaim". Both describe the pain accurately, but in an ad they read as outcome promises, so we've kept them out of copy. Is that the right reading of the register?
  2. Right to work. The product does a passport-based check at sign-up; the brief says it can't appear in ads yet. The PR plan's 1 October story explains the new rule without claiming the product does it. Can PR go further once the check is live?
  3. "Quarterly reports" and "submission receipts". The brief's product description mentions submissions; the Terms say no filing to HMRC. Which is current? Until we know, copy says "MTD-ready records".
  4. The price anchor. The brief says subbies pay an accountant £40–80 a month; our research found £100–300 a year, and "under a tenner" a month as the ceiling. The anchor affects how £25 +VAT lands and whether we lead with Free (we do).
  5. The name. Settled: Zee, with Zee Solo and Zee Hub. Three apps in the same space already use "Solo", so store titles and handles lead with "Zee".
11What do we need to finish it?

Four documents and two answers

  1. The Solo Claims Register v0.2. Every status on this page is provisional without it.
  2. Lena's research on real wrong invoices (Confluence). The best source of true, specific hooks.
  3. The "Hubs & Subs — MTD for builders only" creative the brief names as the tone reference.
  4. The pricing PDF (CIS_Portal_Pricing_EN.pdf), to check every price line.
  5. Does the app ever ask for a Government Gateway login? If not, "we never ask for it" is one of our strongest trust lines.
  6. Can Zee Solo hold statements from contractors who aren't on Zee Hub? That decides whether "every payslip in one place" is usable.

When the register arrives, every line gets a final status. The approved set becomes the copy bank for ads, store listings, the landing page and creator briefs.
